A hairstylist for over 10 years, Justine spent the early days of her career attending countless educational classes to refine her skills before apprenticing under the mentorship of Jen Atkin. It was through Jen she learned to refine her skills to accommodate celebrities, cameras, lighting, and film. She also worked closely with Jen to create the online hair-based platform, Mane Addicts in 2014, where she was the Editorial Director and Social Media Manager until December 2016, when her role shifted to creative consultant.
 
Admiration for Justine’s work as well as outreach for her expertise has been featured in many publications including Teen Vogue, Glamour, Allure, Elle, InStyle, People Style, Refinery29, US Weekly, Byrdie, and more. Refinery29 called Justine “The Queen of Braids” and named her as one of the “Pros Who Would Change the Way You Do Your Hair.”

What are your top tips when it comes to using extensions?

Match the color and cut them to blend! These are the two biggest oversights and are key to a seamless application.
 
You have been described as ”The Queen of Braids”, how do you feel when you hear that?
 
I’m flattered! I love doing braids. It’s been a practice that has been around for ages and I love seeing the never ending interpretations of the technique.
 
What’s the secret behind getting the perfect braid?
 
Don’t try to make it perfect!

I always try to go above and beyond in my business and for my clients.

When you style for the red carpet, what’s important to keep in mind?
 
Red carpet looks will always depend on the event, the theme, the wardrobe, the weather, the person, and the makeup. We have to decide if we are making a statement or staying minimal and opt for something that will get the message across.

How do you practice to further improve your skills?

I work pretty much every day, and I always push myself to do my best work. My constantly aiming to do my best, I can continue to grow.
What does a typical day for look like for you?

There’s nothing typical!
 
What are your tips to succeed as a hair stylist?

Remember that when you are working with a client you are there to serve them. It is not about you, and you should always do your best to make your client feel beautiful, special, and taken care of.

Where do you get inspiration from?

Everywhere! My peers, social media, editorials, nature, architecture!
 
What’s your signature look?

Simple, clean, and effortless.

How do you do that?

I focus on healthy hair and healthy skin. I use great products, like the Tresemme Keratin Smooth line to keep my hair shiny and take Olly Undeniable Beauty Gummy vitamins regularly. To style my hair, I either flat iron with my ghd platinum iron, or add a few face framing waves around the front.

What are hottest hair trends at the moment?

Healthy, shiny hair and blunt, full ends.

What do you think will be the next big trend in hair extensions?

Faux ponytails! I love a good faux pony!

Do you have any hidden talents / anything people don’t know about you?

I used to teach yoga!
 
Who is your biggest role model?

Jen Atkin. She’s been my mentor for years and I’m so inspired by her success and hard work!
 
What’s your biggest fear?

Karaoke.
